This site is funny, unconventional,
and unlike any dog or puppy potty training site
you've visited! Be prepared........

First, let's answer the question: What is housetraining, housebreaking, dog potty training, puppy house training, puppy dog toilet training, etc.? Simply put, it's training your dog or puppy to hold his pee or poop until he gets to where you want him to get rid of it.

Let's say right now at this very second, *you* really have to pee. What are you going to do? Are you going to pee right where you are sitting? I doubt it. You are going to get up and walk into the bathroom and use the toilet. Why? Because someone took the time to teach you to do that!!! (BTW, go ahead if you need to. I'll be here when you come back...)

Your dog or puppy is really not that different. S/he already knows *how* to pee and poop-- just not *where* to pee and poop and, sometimes, *when* to do it. So it's up to you to train him or her. (From now on, I'm just going to use "he" and "him" because it gets so awkward otherwise -- "it" is too impersonal, and using "one" to refer to both is really too formal, especially when we're talking about pee and poop! "Saying "urination," "micturition," "feces," "defecation," "elimination," and "waste" is not the way I normally talk in everyday conversation and it feels awkward for me, so please excuse the informality.)

What this means is that dog or puppy potty training (aka housebreaking, housetraining, toilet training) is really a people issue, not a dog issue, so please have reasonable expectations, especially with puppies.

I chuckle at the sites that claim "Housebreak your Dog in Five Days," "Potty Train your Puppy in 48 Hours," or -- my favorite -- "Housetraining your Dog in One Day"! There are all those great promises or gut-wrenching questions which entice you to buy their product. You buy the product, follow their advice, and, somehow, it just doesn't quite work -- because many times, the issue is *not* potty training. It can be due to behavior, health, or other reasons. We need to find out what the real problem is and then solve that, not simply deal with a symptom. Or maybe you have a question because what you're doing simply needs to be tweaked a bit -- but you have no one to ask. Who ya gonna call???

And then there are the sites that rate the other sites -- and get paid every time you click through and buy the ones that they recommend! Lovely. Do you actually know who is behind any of these sites? It could be a legitimate trainer who know what s/he's talking about. It could be an author who doesn't even own a dog but knows how to do research and put words together to make the product appeal to you so you'll buy it. It also could be someone whose claim to fame is being Internet savvy in marketing who hired one of those authors or trainers. Ya never know...

Why is this puppy dog potty training site different? Because you get to actually speak with me and together, we work on a program that will work for you and your dog or puppy!

"Who are you?" you ask. Good question. My name is Caryl Wolff, and I'm a dog trainer and behavior consultant who's been working with dogs and their people for 20 years. I *want* you to know who I am and what my qualifications are so you can be comfortable working with me. I'm proud of what I've accomplished in training dogs and puppies as well as learning about dog and puppy behavior. Click here to find out more about me and my training and experience.

Every time I write an article or a book, I do extensive research including books, magazine articles from dog magazines going back to the 1990s, dog blogs and other Internet forums, as well as looked through my own personal notes which number over 900 pages. There's lots of stuff on pee and poop! Most of them say basically the same thing, but every once in a while, there is a gem that I hadn't thought of before -- plus there's my own personal tricks that I've developed over the years. I pass these on to you and let you know the reasons behind my thoughts. So you're getting a lot of knowledge and experience when you schedule a consultation. Along with the consultation, you get a FREE copy of my book!

It does not create any form of legal or professional relationship. Caryl Wolff does not accept any liability or responsibility for any action taken or avoided on the basis of information provided herein. Please consult a veterinarian in matters relating to your dog’s health and particularly with respect to any symptoms that may require diagnosis or medical attention, a groomer for grooming issues, a dog trainer for dog training issues, and a dog behavior consultant for dog behavior issues so that each professional consultation can be tailored to your own individual circumstances.

A telephone consultation is a valuable tool to help you find solutions to your dog’s or puppy’s issues in cases where an in-person private session is not feasible. With both a telephone consultation and private session, I try to determine the reason for your puppy/dog’s behavior and see if there are environmental cues or triggers causing the behavior issue. However, during an in-person session, I can observe your puppy/dog in its home environment and make suggestions and suggest protocols on how to proceed that are specifically geared to you, your puppy/dog, and your environment. Nevertheless, a phone consult is an initial step in helping both you and your puppy/dog. You will receive a written summary of what we discussed, handout(s) and book(s)if applicable, and other resources.
